What does "miss the forest for the trees" mean?

Here's an example:
Jerry: I am going to start adding corn grits to my chili!
Sally: Why?
Jerry: It's hard to scoop up chili with a corn chip, but I still like how the taste of corn goes with chili! I thought how if I add corn grits into the chili, I will get the taste but I can eat it with a spoon!
Sally: I think you missed the forest for the trees. You got to caught up in the details of taste and eatability to notice the real point of chili: to add crunchy texture.
