It makes them feel safe and protected, that's why.

Cats are weird. I believe it's for comfort as well, but sometimes they won't fit in the box and will be uncomfortable in it, but still sit there. So who knows?

Im guessing they believe that it's a safe place or something where they can imagane and sleep.

It probably makes them feel protected because every time I put a box on the floor, my cat comes running and hopping into it.
