She used to be a wild fox yokai, but Nanami tamed her. She is big friends with Nanami and doesn't know that Tomoe is also Nanami's familiar, because she has always been out for stuff while Tomoe was in the shrine or just around. Likewise, Tomoe doesn't know that Mayame is Nanami's familiar.
