Red Winter
Chapter 1.
Snow day!

Snow day!

I woke up one morning to a cold gust of wind blowing through my curtains. It was too cold to get out from under my warm blankets so I just rolled up in them and got up to close the window. The familiar creak of the weak floor boards under my weight as i sluggishly made my way to the window. I tore the curtains open and was greeted with blinding white, causing me to loose my vision for a moment. Once it returned I was greeted to a blanket of white just outside my window. A small smile tugged at my lips as i slammed the window shut. Just yesterday it was at least ninety degrees but now it was snowing like crazy. I watched as the snow fell for some time when my brother burst into my room. "Lilli!" He shouted loudly causing me to turn too quickly and trip over my blankets. "Harley! Would you knock next time?" I gripped at him, as i got up to my feet. He laughed awkwardly and gave me a sheepish smile."I'm sorry Lillian... Its just snowing and thought you were still asleep." I shook my head with a small smile. "Its whatever- wait a sec shouldn't... we be in school?" He shrugged lightly. "Naw, Mum is sick... That's why we didn't wake you at six," He said looking around at the pale walls. "Also I am making breakfast, whatchu want?" His blue eyes looked back to me and I shrugged. "Sugar," I answered. "Soooo plain oatmeal, I got you!" He says as he walks out. I rolled my eyes. "No! Get me sugar you... you Boy!" I said as the door shut.
After breakfast I sat at the window, snow was still coming down full force. Little flakes of white fluttering their way down and finally resting on the ground. I felt a warm hand on my shoulder and looked up to see my brother with a thin smile. "Its really coming down isn't it?" He asked as his deep blue eyes looking down to me. I looked back to the snow and smiled slightly. "Yeah, its almost as if its not summer anymore." He chuckled lightly. "Feels like Christmas doesn't it?" I nodded and looked to him. "You think we may actually be able to go outside?" I asked. His blue eyes darted and he lowered his voice. "Yeah i mean mom IS sick after all... maybe just a little bit." He tells me. "But first you gotta get dressed appropriately for the weather, I think it's too cold for a nightgown." I look down at my white night gown and sigh. "Do i have to?" I ask in false frustration. He rolls his eyes and walks to his room. "Yes Lills now get dressed." I jump to my feet and bolt down the hall, nearly slipping on the hardwood twice. I get to my room and pull on some white leggings and throw a sweater on over my night clothes. I grabbed my dark red scarf and tied it around my neck like i usually do. My brother stood by the door holding a pair of black glossy boots. "You ready to go Lilli?" he asks me as I nab the boots from his hand. I nodded when i pulled them on. "Your gonna be cold hun," He tells me. "Oh shush!" i tell him. "I never get cold!" he laughed at my stubbornness. "Whatever you say," And with that he opened the door, the cold punching me in the face as I ran out onto the porch and threw my arms up. Hart walked out after me, closing the door silently behind me. "How about we go out the woods," He suggests. "Just walking out in the cold?" I nodded and leapt over the railing on the porch, landing into the soft powder. He leapt off second and sprinted out to the tree line. "H-Hey!" I exclaimed as i ran after him, laughing. "Wait for me!"
I ran after him for a little bit until i somehow lost him. "Harley?" I called out to my brother, suddenly a ball of powder and ice hit me in the chest with great force. I looked in the direction in where it came to see my brother giggling in his gloved hand. I narrowed my dark green eyes and picked up a chunk of snow and lobbed it at him, hitting him in the face. He narrowed his eyes and grinned. I laughed a little bit. "Oh come here you!" He shouted at me running towards me. I yelped and started sprinting through the snow, dodging trees skillfully. He'd catch up eventually, but if i could just loose him. Suddenly a plan in mind I sprinted even harder, feeling the coolness in my throat of my breath. Harley still ran behind me with a wide grin. Then suddenly I tripped and started rolling down a steep hill.
Down...
        Down...
                Down...
Until i collided with a tree, lucky i had my hadn't broken anything important. I started to get to my feet as my brother ran down and hugged me tight. I laughed a little bit. "Im fine Harley, Im okay!" I said, laughing a tad. He held my in front of him and looked me over. "Nothing broken?" He asks and I roll my eyes. "Id be screaming if i broke something, and something would be at a funny angle." I tell him. He smiles a little. "I guess you're okay, but lets go back home" He lifts me up and i take hold of him with a sigh as he trudges back up the mountain. On the way up i thought i saw something or someone peek out at me and Harley from behind a tree. I could have sworn it had one blood red eye with black liquid pouring out of an empty eye socket. But when i blinked it was gone. "Must have been my imagination," I thought as i leaned on my brother's left shoulder and slipped into an effortless sleep.
