Chapter 1Ravenheart's paws thudded quietly on the soft, muddy ground. Cinderleaf growled in annoyance as the black gunk caught between her claws. As they padded over and marked the border, Puddleshine's ears perked up and she looked around. They paused, unsure what was happening. Before long, Ravenheart heard a rustle in a nearby fern and she felt her hackles raise.
"Who's there?" Puddleshine hissed, unsheathing her thorn-sharp claws. Sightstorm's blue eyes darted to the bush and he bared his teeth. Cinderleaf's normally cranky eyes narrowed as she sniffed out a cat. Before long, a small figure crawled out of the ferns and Puddleshine snorted. A Shadowclan apprentice. Figured.
"What are you doing here without your mentor?" Sightstorm mewed, his natural friendly side almost seeping out of his pelt. Cinderleaf growled under her breath, flicking her long tail. Puddleshine cocked her head and her whiskers twitched as she gazed at the apprentice.
"And what's your name?" She purred, her eyes gleaming.
"My name is Shadowpaw." She mewed quietly. Her black tail quivered nervously and she swiped a paws over her ear. Cinderleaf grunted and started to pad away before getting pulled back by Puddleshine.
"Where are you going? We can't just leave Shadowpaw here!" She yowled, her voice whiny. Sightstorm nodded in agreement and glanced over at Ravenheart. She shrugged and looked away. She wasn't very good with young cats. Cinderleaf's eyes flickered, a spark of sympathy swimming through them. Before long, she sighed and nodded.
"F-fox!" Sightstorm stammered, his eyes staring at the large dog-like figure in front of us. It's yellow teeth were bared into an ugly snarl and it was inching closer. Beneath it's ginger pelt they could see sharp ribs jutting out from underneath. It was hungry.
"Shadowpaw! Get behind us!" Cinderleaf growled, her voice frightened but mostly angry. Ravenheart leaped foward, quickly followed by Sightstorm. She clawed the fox over the muzzle and leaped back. As Cinderleaf and Puddleshine guarded Shadowpaw, the fox snapped it's jaws a mouse tail away from Sightstorm's neck. It had had enough.
"Watch out!" Shadowpaw screeched, tackling the side of the fox's large head. The beast yipped as the apprentice dug her claws into it's eyes. It scampered away, tail between legs. All of us gawked, unsure what had happened.
"Y-you saved us!" Puddleshine laughed, her voice somehow still optimistic through all of the fiasco. Shadowpaw didn't respond, as if she had no idea what she did. After a few minutes, they found her mentor and they headed back to Thunderclan camp. One thing was for sure, they would be looking for her at the next gathering as a warrior.
