Why are fathers so overprotective?

Fathers are so overprotective of their daughters, and I know how it feels. My dad would say stuff like, "You're a girl, so you're more delicate. You need to be protected." Why are they though? In 5th grade, I dated this weird kid named Adriel and my dad didn't approve of it. He fell in love with me on the first day of school on 8/15/2016, and about a month later, we kissed in the playground in front of everyone, and word got around. Our teacher found out and then requested a meeting with my parents, and that's when I had to come clean. My dad was so upset that he threatened to move me to a different school ( he never did though and I still go to the same one ) and he didn't talk to me at all for about three weeks. He ignored me and gave me the silent treatment at that time and it felt so harsh. However, there's a lot of other relationships that my dad never found out about, and I'm glad he never did. Recently, I was in a relationship with this guy named Ricky, but I stopped talking to him because he was annoying, and when my dad found out about him, he wasn't mad compared to when I was with Adriel. Maybe it's because I'm older now.
