Hmm.. It really depends, it's a phrase that is said to a person, mostly to those who dont hide fear very much, so 'smelling' instead of 'seeing' seems to kinda freak someone out even more, but, those who study the body language of a person can also sense any emotion in that said person. But the reason that it matters is because some people release a scent, weather it could be sweat to really bad breath. People sweat when they're nervous, so it can also work on fear, so bad breath See More▼ works the same. Hope it helped ;)

Yes. I can smell fear coz when my sis is scared her face is normal but I can SMELL she is scared

Yessssss... people can. everyone has fear that overpowers the spirit and rules the body...such a horrible stench.

Fear is an abstract noun- you can't see it touch it taste it hear it and you indeed cannot smell it
